SURGE CYCLING FAQS

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF INDOOR CYCLING?

Indoor cycling offers a bunch of benefits:

• An efficient and effective cardio workout

• Low impact on hips, knees and joints

• High caloric burn

• Excellent cross training

• Weight loss and muscle toning

I'M A LITTLE NERVOUS AND I'M NOT SUPER FIT. IS THIS GOING TO SUCK?

Heck no. Indoor cycling is a low-impact cardio workout adaptable to all levels of fitness. You're in control of your ride and are encouraged to go at your own pace. We'll scream and holler to push you, but you can kindly tell us to fudge off.

Dear newbies: Get to the studio at least 15 minutes before your first class so we can make sure you're properly fitted on the bike. Your instructor will also explain how the bike works and make sure you're comfortable using it. Also, mention if you have any injuries or if you're pregnant (congratulations!). Modifications are always encouraged. Once class starts, work within your comfort zone and adjust the gears accordingly. During class, listen to the instructor, as well as your body. We want you to feel comfortable and confident on that bike!

WHAT SHOULD I WEAR / BRING?

Wear comfortable athletic gear you'd normally exercise in. Don't wear loose, baggy pants — they could get caught in the bike.

Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! Bring your water bottle. If you forget, no worries, we have bottled water available for purchase. Everybody gets a sweat towel for class — you’re gonna need it!

WHAT BIKES DO YOU USE?

Only the best! We searched high and low for the very best indoor bike around. Unlike the Spinning® stationary bikes, we chose the Keiser® M3i Indoor Cycle. They use magnetic resistance for super smooth, quiet and effective ride. They're manufactured right here in the good ole USA and we're obsessed with the quality. All bikes come with a console that displays:

• RPM (revolutions per minute)

• Power output displays in watts (currently generating)

• Heart rate (Polar compatible)

• Pedaling Time

• Gear (resistance, 1 - 24)

• Odometer/trip distance

Most importantly, the Keiser M3i bikes are completely adjustable. You can set up your bike so it's just right for your body. Optimum fit is key for a comfortable, safe and enjoyable ride.

DO I NEED SPECIAL SHOES / DO YOU RENT SHOES?

The Keiser M3 Plus bikes at Surge Cycling have a dual-sided pedal that has a cage on one side (for your normal tennies) and a SPD-compatible clip on the other for cycling shoes.

Although cycling shoes are not mandatory for Surge Cycling spin classes, we highly recommend them. (And they're free to rent!) They make a huge difference in your efficiency on the bike. You'll see an increase of up to 30% in your power output when you're clipped in and properly able to pull up on that pedal. It’s well worth the investment if you see yourself making indoor cycling a regular part of your fitness routine. We usually have gently used cycling shoes for sale if you really, really love them. Just ask front desk.

HOW MANY CALORIES WILL I BURN?

Every person is different. Depending on the intensity, your weight, how hard you push yourself, and your fitness level — you can burn anywhere from 450 to 700 calories during a 45-minute class. However...the magic happens after your ride during the afterburn. Your body can continue burning calories up to 48 hours after your workout! (Seriously.)

WHERE DO I PARK?

We've got a convenient surface lot right outside the front door. Pull up and park for free.

SHOULD I USE A HEART RATE MONITOR?

Totally up to you. If you want to see your heart rate on our Keiser M3 Plus console found on each bike, you're going to need to provide your own ANT+ heart rate strap. Polar heart rate straps are compatible with our Keiser M3 Plus bikes. We provide you with all the necessary tools to monitor and track your workout, including power and cadence. How you choose to use them or ignore them is up to you!

DO YOU HAVE STORAGE FOR MY STUFF?

Nah, we toss it outside. Kidding! We've got lots of cubbies inside the studio, as well as a place for your jacket and shoes in the lobby (which gets locked during every class).

DO YOU HAVE CHANGING ROOMS / SHOWERS?

We have plenty of changing rooms and one, big, wonderful shower if you need to wash off after class. We provide shower towels, body wash and shampoo/conditioner.

HOW DO I SIGN UP FOR A CLASS?

Piece-a-cake. You can sign up for individual (drop-in) classes or multiple classes when you buy a class package. Sign up for a Surge Cycling class in a few simple steps:

1. Head to the sign up link at the top right of your screen to create an account.

2. Go back to top of the menu and click schedule to see class times.

3. Pick your class and follow the prompts. (And then get really, really excited.)

4. Download our app for your Apple or Android device and do it all on the go!

New here? Be sure to show up 15 minutes before class starts so we can get you set up on the bike and make sure you're comfortable.

WHAT'S YOUR ARRIVAL TIME AND CANCELLATION POLICY?

Arrival time
Get to the studio at least 15 minutes before class starts. Keep in mind, classes start promptly on time and lobby doors will be locked at the start of class for our riders' safety.

Cancellation policy
To avoid a late cancellation fee, you can cancel your reservation 6 hours before all classes. If you cancel outside that window, you'll lose your class credit and get charged a $12 late cancellation fee. Late cancellations are only handled online through our Surge Cycling booking platform. Calling, texting, emailing, any form of social media DMing, tweeting, skywriting, or smoke signaling will not be accepted. (Sorry.) All no-shows will lose a class credit and get charged a $20 no-show fee.

WHAT IS THE WAITLIST AND HOW DOES IT WORK?

If a class you’d like to take is full, we highly recommend putting yourself on the waitlist. If a spot opens up, we'll add you to the class and send a confirmation. Make sure you opt-in for email and text notifications, and check both your inbox and junk/spam folders (just in case). If you don't get a spot in the class, you won't lose your class credit.

IS THERE AN AGE / HEIGHT / WEIGHT LIMIT?

New clients younger than 18 will need a parent to sign our new client waiver. Parents, it's important to keep in mind some of our classes include uncensored songs and explicit language. If you have concerns about that, give us a call and we'll recommend a class that's squeaky clean for your kiddo. Our Keiser® bikes can accommodate riders 4’10” to 7’ tall and up to 350 pounds.
